The University of Alberta’s School of Medicine is offering health insurance for students that don’t have a traditional health insurance provider.
The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is available to students who meet income requirements, and who have less than $150,000 in income.
The university is accepting applications for the SHIP starting today and the first class of students is scheduled to begin enrolling this fall.
“We recognize the challenges of having students without a traditional insurer,” said Dr. Peter Stuckerman, SHIP director.
Students enrolled in the SHIFP will have to pay for their own premiums, but there will be no deductible for the student.
The students enrolled in SHIP are eligible to participate in a new student health insurance option, the Health Insurance Plans of Alberta.
As of March 10, students who have already been enrolled in an Alberta-based health insurance marketplace can enroll in the Health Insured Students Plan (HIPS), a more traditional insurance option.
HIPS is available for students with incomes up to $150.50, $160.00 or $180.00 per month.
Students who do not have insurance coverage can enroll through SHIP.
SHIP students can enroll with one of the four main insurers, including Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Progressive, or Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Students enrolled in Blue Cross and Humana health insurance plans can continue to have access to their own coverage.
Students can enroll for a student health plan through a private health insurance company, such as Cigna, Blue Shield, or Kaiser Permanente.
Students with student health plans can enroll as an Individual, Group, or Family Plan.
Individuals enrolled in a SHIP plan can choose to enroll in a health insurance exchange, which is a public marketplace for the sale of insurance policies.
They will receive the same coverage as a private insurance plan, but with an enrollment period that begins when they enroll in SHIF.
If they enroll into a SHIF, they will be required to make their own enrollment decisions, and will be allowed to increase their monthly premiums to cover the higher premiums and to offset the cost of the SHIPP premiums.
An individual student enrolled in HIPS, a student with an existing health insurance policy, and a SHIPP student will be eligible to enroll for the same policies as a SHIFT or SHIF student.
SHIPP students who enroll in an SHIP will be able to keep their SHIPP policies and receive a monthly premium refund equal to the difference between the SHIFT and SHIF premium amounts.
SHIP students enrolled for an SHIF will have access for the entire calendar year, regardless of whether they enroll for SHIF or SHIP and will have the same enrollment period as SHIF students.
Students may choose to remain on SHIP with an increased monthly premium.
