More than 50 states have more than 50,000 concealed carry permits in circulation, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
According to the GAO, the states with the highest numbers of permits are California, Illinois, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington, DC.
The states with less than 50 permits are Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.
In total, nearly 70 percent of Americans have permits to carry a concealed weapon in their home state.
As of July 31, 2016, the number of states with more than 500 permits had grown to 538, up from 476 in 2014, according the report.
That’s up from 48 states in 2013.
But the number is expected to grow to 704,000 by 2019, with the states of Alabama, New Hampshire, New Zealand, Nevada and Texas having the highest permit counts.
In total, the report notes that 2.4 million permits have been issued in the U.S. since 2010.
That number is higher than the total number of permits issued in 2015, which was 2.2 million.
